As a team of esteemed designers, we at LUMI value a design direction that is flexible but stays true to our brand and vision for interior design. We further our team's vision through research and collaborative brainstorming to offer our clients and the world. This is how we keep up with the times.
Natural Elements - The incorporation of natural elements into furniture design is old news however, wood finishes that highlight the grain, rattan or wicker furniture, and live indoor plants as decorative elements have been on-trend lately. These elements bring in the sense of nature, warmth, and life into spaces. This further gives emphasis to the idea that natural equates to luxury as nature is rich and has the most interesting patterns that we could take inspiration from or even use as materials. Examples of interesting patterns that can be used as materials are Zebrano wood, Sequoia Brown marble, and even rattan especially when it’s woven.
Curves - Soft curves and rounded edges have been a fad in furniture design lately. Curved sofas, semi-circular armchairs, and round (even oddly-shaped) coffee tables add touches of elegance and visual interest to a room giving contrast to the straight lines of other furniture pieces and the walls of a space. Contrast, being one of the design principles, gives balance to the space and as aforementioned, gives visual interest.
Sustainable Materials: Furniture made from sustainable materials has surfaced the world of interior design. Increased environmental consciousness has been a worldwide focus for the past 5 years and as interior design progresses, the trend on sustainability has grown into this field, as well. Bamboo, reclaimed wood, recycled plastic, and eco-friendly textiles are being used to create stylish and eco-conscious furniture pieces. This gives new forms and even patterns that not only contributes to the sustainable movement but also towards the visual appeal on furniture.
Artisanal Products & Handicraft – there is now a growing appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship and handiwork. These unique pieces showcase the maker’s craftsmanship and intricate details that are valued for their authenticity, individuality, and sense of self. This is also a type of sustainability as we grow into considering the process as much as the end-result. Artisanal products and handicraft means locally sourcing out artisans and materials which equates to lower carbon footprints.
Statement Pieces: Including bold and eye-catching furniture pieces have been on-trend recently. Statement accessories, vibrant dining chairs, or a unique coffee table design can act as focal points in a room, adding personality and visual appeal. Contrary to the belief that statement pieces have to be expensive or something with gold in it, in the field of interior design, it isn’t. Statement pieces can be that bold red lamp sitting at the corner or the fringe-lined cushion on your sofa.
Vintage pieces: Vintage and thrifted pieces add character, personality, and a sense of history to interior design. If carefully curated, they can even be statement pieces! The trend on vintage pieces nowadays are actually quite smart because not only does it help in environmental consciousness but also in giving the space something to talk about, something that could pique interest.
Tech Integration: As technology incessantly plays an important role in our lives, furniture with integrated technology features has become increasingly popular. Examples include integrated charging stations in desks, built-in speakers in furniture pieces, and wireless charging pads integrated into side tables or desks. As the world advances, so must the field of interior design.
Multifunctional Furniture: Multifunctional or multipurpose furniture has surfaced in terms of furniture trend as living spaces become smaller these days. Functionality and practicality is inevitable in these times so this innovation in interior design is a need. Examples of multifunctional furniture include sofa beds, coffee tables with built-in storage compartments, and coffee tables that could also be used as a dining table.
Layered Materials: The integration of different materials in furniture design gives that unique and rich look. Examples are joining wood with metal and fabric or pairing different fabrics in one furniture. This adds depth and character to a space. As opposed to the belief that the usage of one material, like one stain of wood, per area, the trend now has evolved to using three or even five different wood materials in an area. After all, the pursuit to creativity is never-ending. However, the idea of layering materials must have a careful and intricate process to achieve cohesiveness in a space.
Prints, patterns, and textures – solid and monotonous design in a furniture may still have a place in interior design but currently, there has been an invasion of prints, patterns, and textures in one single piece of furniture. This really pushes the limit of furniture design and interior design as well since critical creative thinking is a necessity to achieve a unified design while incorporating these elements.
We value all these at LUMI and we are glad to have these things applied to our work even from before. It is actually really progressive to give personality and uniqueness to spaces – so, you can say that these trends will be timeless even as interior design progresses.
It felt like creativity has been on a halt these past few years since technicalities and practicality has been pursued more. However, as these growing furniture trends have taken over the design field, we can’t be happier to create warm and livable spaces without compromising creativity for our clients so we can share more with the world.
